The average sugar glider weighs 4-5 ounces, and they are about 12 inches long from nose to tail. They are a very social creature, living in small family groups of one male and two females.
They are also nocturnal, and they are very sensitive to odors. If you can, keep your gliders in a cage during the night.
Nutrition
In the wild, sugar gliders eat a diet that includes nectar, honeydew, pollen, and sap. These are rich in vitamins and minerals, and they help strengthen their bones and muscles.
Protein
Commercially available sugar glider pellets, a small amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, live insects, occasional treats, and calcium and multivitamin supplements are recommended to help meet your glider's nutritional needs. These diets are formulated with the input of veterinarians and zookeepers, and offer a complete balance of nutrients for a healthy sugar glider.
Fruit & Vegetables
The sugar gliders' favorite foods include apples, sweet corn, bananas, avocados, peaches, pineapples, and other fruits. Vegetables such as carrots, green beans, red bell peppers, spinach, and broccoli are good choices too.
Keeping in mind that sugar gliders are omnivores, their diet should include a balance of protein and fruit to provide the necessary amino acids and other vitamins. In general, a ratio of 40% fruit and vegetables to 60% protein-based food is suggested. This is a reasonable balance for most gliders. |
