While onions are a staple part of many people’s diets, they are not appropriate for gliders. Onions are highly inflammatory and may cause gastrointestinal distress in your pet.
They are also very high in oxalates, which impair the absorption of calcium. Onions can also lead to kidney damage or even liver disease in gliders.
Other Foods That Are Not Suitable for Gliders
Grapes and raisins are an occasional treat but are not recommended. They are high in oxalates, which can make your sugar glider sick.
Rice is another option but it must be fully cooked and should only be a small portion of your glider’s diet.
Fruit and Vegetables are an important part of your glider’s diet, providing a healthy variety of nutrients. Try to include a small amount of each day, incorporating vegetables and fruits like apples, bananas, pears, tomatoes, sweet peppers, carrots and corn.
Vegetables and fruits should comprise about 40 percent of your glider’s diet. You can choose fresh or frozen, but remember that the fruit and vegetables need to be washed and thawed before feeding.
A nutrient-rich nectar mix is also an important component of your glider’s diet. You may buy a premade nectar mix or make your own using honey, hard-boiled eggs and water.
You can use this mixture as a base and add other foods such as mealworms, which are an excellent source of protein but can be very fattening. In addition, a variety of supplements can be added to the nectar mix as needed, but be sure not to overdo it. |
